Charman hopeful of adding to squad after ‘disappointing’ last-ditch defeat

Charman admitted the Hornets looked tired in last night’s last-minute defeat to Burgess Hill Town, which the manager said was ‘hard to take’.

With fixtures piling up over the coming weeks, Charman knows he has to add bodies to his squad and expects to sign the midfielder today.

He said: “I will be signing a couple of players - there is no doubt I need a bit of strength in depth.

“I will be signing a centre midfielder because of the amount of games we have got in such a short time. I need a top man and to be honest I would like to sign a wide man as well just to have a few options.

“We haven’t really got a plan B at the moment. I haven’t got one of these strikers that you can play the ball up to - I don’t want to play like that, but looking at it, I might have to try to bring one in to maybe sit on the bench if things don’t pan out as I’d like them to.

“I applied for five (players, recently) and all five turned me down because of money.”

Greg Luer’s goal in the fourth minute of injury time last night came as a hammer blow to Horsham, who looked set to take a point despite playing poorly.

Charman said: “I don’t think we deserved a point. I thought we were very poor in possession, and we looked tired.

“It’s hard to take because it’s the last kick of the game. I’m disappointed because of the way it happened but more disappointed with the way we played.

“There were some good performances from certain players - Jahmahl King was excellent, Cadey (Jamie Cade) was excellent, my goalkeeper kept us in it a couple of times.

“I take my hat off to Burgess Hill, they were superb tonight and deserved to win the game.”

With just 48 hours between the Burgess Hill fixture and tomorrow’s (Wednesday February 26) meeting with Leatherhead, the Hornets’ squad is set for a test against promotion-chasing opposition.

But Charman was optimistic ahead of the clash.

He said: “It wouldn’t surprise me if we went to Leatherhead and turned them over, because we are that sort of team where you don’t know what you are going to get with us at the moment.”
