Candy set for California dream

Tennis talent Frances Candy has received yet another call-up to represent her country in global competition.

The St Leonards-based player has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 ITF Seniors World Team Championships in San Diego, California, next February.

Candy, the head coach at Rye LTC, will also line-up in the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships the following week. Both events will take place on hard courts.

She will once again be playing in the women’s over-55 category, the same age group which saw her help Great Britain clinch a silver medal at the team event in New Zealand at the time of the earthquake in the early part of this year.

Candy, also a five-times bronze medalist in the team event, said: “In New Zealand this year we got silver and that’s the best we’ve ever done. I think we know it’s going to be pretty hard next year (with the event taking place in the homeland of the 2010 winners).”

The structure of the team tournament – for the Maureen Connolly Cup - sees nations compete against each other in their age category on a round-robin basis, followed by a knockout stage to decide the winners and final positions.

Nations can nominate teams of up to four players, and each tie consists of a best-of-three rubbers format with two singles and a doubles. Age categories range from 35-55 for seniors and 60-80 for super-seniors.
