The St Leonards cueman became the first player to come through the qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this lunchtime (Wednesday) when he completed a 10-3 win over Ken Doherty.

World number 18 Davis paved the way for victory by opening up a commanding 8-1 cushion after yesterday’s first session and he duly pocketed the two more frames he needed to finish the job this morning.

Former champion Doherty, now ranked 46, claimed the opening frame of the second session only for Davis to take the next and move within one of victory.

Davis, who beat Oliver Lines 10-7 and Joe O’Connor 10-4 in the previous rounds, came close to finishing things off in frame 12, but he did get over the line in the next aided by a 62 break.

The 42-year-old will now line up alongside the world’s top 16 players and 15 other qualifiers in the main draw at The Crucible in Sheffield, which will get underway on Saturday.

Davis could be joined at The Crucible by Bexhill-based Jimmy Robertson, who leads Xiao Guodong 5-4 after the opening session of their final qualifying round match. The second session will begin at 5pm today.
