Bowls tournament is a success

THE first combined ladies' and men's Hastings Open Bowls Tournament at the White Rock Gardens was deemed a great success.

Blessed with wonderful weather and top quality play throughout the fortnight, the competition garnered the opinion that the decision to merge had been the correct one.

The final week of competition saw Simon Moore (White Rock), Bill Hulbert (Eastbourne), and Norman and Nigel Hooper (Sidley Martlets) win the fours 19-13 against Ron Packham (Northiam), "Tosh" Springate, Andy Anderson (both Gillingham) and John Dixon (White Rock).

White Rock trio Ray Hemsley, Kevin Robinson and Gordon Baldock won the triples 19-15 against Margot Fletcher (White Rock Ladies), and Jean and Mike Davis (Birmingham).

After a break of only 45 minutes Packham, partnered by fellow Northiam bowler Reg Humphrey, was back in action in the Men's Pairs. It wasn't to be Ron's day though because after being 11-5 down White Rock pair Gordon Leggatt and Phil Baker came back strongly to take the honours 26-19.

Joy Woodcock and Ruth Rose (both Fairlight) took the Ladies' Pairs with an 18-16 victory over Margaret Watson (Hollington) and Pam Farrance (White Rock Ladies).
