Bowls finals captivate crowd

A CAPTIVATED crowd in excess of 200 watched the finals of the 67th Bexhill Men's Open Bowls Tournament at the Polegrove on Saturday in brilliant sunshine.

The 2002 winner, Roger Butler, from the Fassnidge Bowling Club in Middlesex, won the singles championship by virtue of 21-11 success over Simon Moore from White Rock. The game was played over 25 ends due to both players drawing their opponent's shot off the jack on many of the ends.

Eastbourne duo Alan Ridington and Stan Aris clinched the pairs championship with a tense 22-19 defeat of Mike Evans (Jersey) and Willie Woods (Rosedale, Middlesex).

This final was a very close tussle as the scores were level at 15-all after 14 ends before Ridington and Aris opened up a two-shot advantage going into the 21st and last end.

The Deeprose brothers, Mick and Derek (Sidley Martlets), together with Colin Nicholls (Bexhill), a substitute for Tony Midwinter who had to make way after three rounds, won the triples championship courtesy of a comfortable 26-9 victory against Peter Barnett, Barry Baker and Mark Overington (Cranleigh RBL). The local trio were never headed as they romped home without too many scares.

Chess Vale duo Andy Loakes and John Smith won the consolation pairs with a 25-9 success over Polegrove pairing Terry Campbell and Alan McBride.

The trophies were presented by Garrick Oliver, who was tournament secretary for a number of years. The tournament committee would like to thank R and R Kitchens and Top Flight Supplies of Hastings for their continued sponsorship of the tournament.
