Bargh reaches last eight in Canada

Cathy Bargh reached two quarter-finals at the BWF World Senior Championships in Canada.

The Sedlescombe-based badminton star got to the last eight of the women’s singles and doubles despite a very strong field in the over-45 age group.

Seeded four in the singles, Bargh had a bye in the first round before being pushed slightly but not a huge amount in overcoming Charlotte Bucksteegen (Germany) 21-9, 21-16 in round two.

But she lost 23-25, 10-21 to the ultra consistent Chika Tanifuji, an unseeded Japanese player, in the next stage. Tanifuji went on to defeat Claire Allison 21-11, 21-14 in the semi-finals and was edged out 23-25, 21-18, 17-21 by compatriot Kumiko Kushiyama in the final.

Bargh and Kay Vickers (Cheshire) were unseeded in the doubles, yet had a good win in their first round tie against Canadian national champions Susan Rogers and Denise Vines 21-14, 21-12. The English duo then comfortably saw off Indian twosome Neera Pasricha and Gangotri Tolia 21-3, 21-4 in round two.

Their run ended, however, as they were outclassed 6-21, 9-21 at the hands of the exceptional Mei Ying Feng and Chia Yi Kang, one of whom is a former full-time international player.

Feng and Kang, the no.2 seeds from Chinese Taipei, proceeded to see off Tanifuji and Kushiyama 21-17, 21-15 in the semi-finals before getting the better of Canadian pair Allison and Evonne Whelan 21-17, 21-14 to clinch the title.
