Ailing Davis suffers in Sheffield

Mark Davis’ hopes of a decent run at the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship were scuppered by illness.

Having felt unwell for a couple of days, the St Leonards cueman found himself 8-1 down after the opening session of his first round tie against Ali Carter.

Davis’ safety play at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield last night (Wednesday) was actually very good, but a top break of just 28 illustrated how his potting let him down.

Carter played very well for a man who hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons and needs only two more frames in the second session this afternoon (Thursday) to seal his place in the last 16.

The 32-year-old from Essex, a two-time ranking event winner and Crucible finalist in 2008, had runs of 44, 65, 72, 101, 76 and 57 as the tie between the lowest ranked seed and highest ranked qualifier became rather one-sided.
