Why Marine Court lifts were removed?

THE recent letters and publicity about Marine Court remind me that some years ago my wife and I were on holiday in Toronto when we came across a Canadian ex-service rally in a square.

On talking to a man and telling him we were from St Leonards, he told us that during the war he was in the air force, spending several months in the Marina on a course.

He liked the building except for the fact that he was on one of the top floors and there were no lifts.

However I presume that there were lifts, but with the number of servicemen in the building it was thought the lifts would be unable to cope, at times, so it was better to take them out of service.
