IF Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill together become the City of Culture, perhaps the trio of towns should have a new all-embracing name?
And even if the three do not win the culture title, the link road will make them one big metropolis of more than 130,000 people. So how about merging their names and calling the new conurbation something like Hastlebex, St Hasbex or Bexhastleon?
But these are hardly inspiring titles. Instead, in The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, one of the most politically influential novels ever written, Hastings and St Leonards became famous around the world as the city of Mugsborough. As the link road has been created by another generation of mugs, the new city of Mugsborough and Bexhill-on-Sea could appropriately be called Mugsborough-on-Sea.
