Councillor Batsford’s comments, quoted by reporter Richard Gladstone in his article about the need for traffic control at the junction of The Ridge and Elphinstone Road, are completely true.
PFARA (Pilot Field Area Residents’ Association) has been agitating for just this since early this century.
Not only for control of wheeled traffic but of pedestrian traffic too: there is no pedestrian crossing on The Ridge between Helenswood Upper Academy and Scollays!
The urgency of this situation was given a sad twist this summer when the users of Friary Gardeners, by St Helen’s Church, wanted to attend the funeral of a colleague.
Naturally, from so near the crematorium, it was decided to walk as a group.
But by the time everyone, disabled and able, had managed to cross over The Ridge and arrived at the chapel, the service was over and the deceased’s friends were left upset and humiliated that they had not been able to mourn their friend at the appropriate time.
Rather than ESCC ‘waiting for the Link Road to bed down’ we need action now so that people can cross safely near his dangerous junction.
Encouraging people to walk and use public transport is useless unless they can walk without fear of being run over by unrestricted traffic.
