The hidden cost of crime panel

THE Observer piece (March 29) concerning last Thursday’s agenda for the Sussex Police and Crime Panel quotes the Police and Crime Commissioner as claiming that the ‘much leaner set-up’ in her office saves some £186,000 compared to that of the former Sussex Police Authority.

This figure is carefully spun, of course, to avoid inclusion of the money election to office cost local taxpayers in the first place. At the rate of savings she identifies, it will be long after she has reached the end of her period of office and even, perhaps, beyond the useful life of the post that this will actually be repaid.
