AS an Olympic torchbearer last Tuesday and a Hastings resident for more than 50 years, may I thank all the organisers who helped to make it such a memorable day.
The police were wonderful, especially the Met ‘out runners’, also the stewards and officials. It was very humbling to hear the stories of the other torchbearers.
Thank you also to all who turned out, especially those who had come from afar. I was so proud to carry the torch on behalf of my family including grandchildren Ellie, Eva, Annie, Mathias, Molly and Nicole. Nicole has a little known condition called neurofibromatosis and was unfortunately in America. This brave little girl nominated me. Many members of the public had their children photographed with the torch afterwards and I wondered if they see this letter would they be kind enough to contribute for research into Nicole’s condition at www.childrenwithtumours.org. Finally thank you to the Observer for the excellent coverage of this momentous event for the town. The British are always playing themselves down but this was Hastings at its best.
