It’s a sad and worrying factor of life today that many older people live alone and suffer from loneliness which can contribute to poor health.
This may be because families and friends have moved away or do not have the time to socialise. People lead busy lives and are possibly not aware of a lonely older neighbour living nearby.
Hastings and St Leonards Seniors’ Forum tries to mitigate the problem by holding a variety of events to enable them to get out, meet new faces and enjoy company.
Our committee is currently planning a Grand Afternoon Tea Party to be held at Azur, St Leonards seafront, on Friday, October 21, which is open to all members at a cost of £2.50 per head. It’s the closing date for ticket sales on July 31, so we want to remind people to fill in the forms enclosed in the summer newsletter. Maybe they would like to bring along someone they know who doesn’t get out much? It will be a splendid tea as well as entertainment and fantastic raffle prizes, starting with a brand new television.
The ticket forms will be available at the forum’s next free coffee morning on Tuesday, July 26, from 10.30am to 12 noon at the Friends Meeting House, South Terrace.
I’m also hoping there will be more entries in our poetry competition, subject: The Battle of Hastings, (four verses on four lines).
The closing date is July 31 and there’s prize money for the first three, starting with £50 first prize, with the winners to be announced at our tea party.
I hope to see old and new faces at the event.
