Monarchy beats any presidential system

WHAT a sour letter J. Boden writes (Observer, June 15).

Our monarchy is anachronistic, elitist and undemocratic. So, yes, it might be the worst form of Head of State - except for all the rest.

Elected presidents must spend much time and money defending their positions. They are also subject to the political whims of the party which they represent (unless they are dictators).

Our monarchy is above all this. I have no doubt our Queen has (strong) views but it is greatly to her credit that she keeps them to herself.

Also the monarchy provides an important, impartial link, which no other country has, from one Government to the next.

I defy Mr Boden to show me a presidential system which betters our monarchy.
