RE: Your report (June 22), ‘Labour’s candidate for top police role chosen’. Soon there will be similar announcements from other parties.
This epitomises the problem with elections for these posts.
The police, of all services, must be apolitical. Yet if the head man/woman has a party label, inevitably the foul taint of politics will pervade and pervert the force however much the person concerned protests otherwise. Godfrey Daniel should offer himself for election as a worthy councillor and JP without the Labour tag.
Better still, these appointments should be made from the ranks of professional policemen, not political placemen.
