False reports on widow spider

THERE was an outbreak of ludicrous, inaccurate and sensational stories published in some of the UK’s newspapers this year pertaining to the notable false widow spider.

Invertebrate conservation charity Buglife has recently teamed up with phobia society Anxiety UK to highlight inappropriate portrayal that resulted in the deaths of harmless spiders and anxiety for many.

If you read any of these stories and are anxious please take a look at the charities’ websites as you may find them reassuring.

I congratulate the Bexhill and Hastings and St Leonards newspapers for not writing any spider scare stories this year and for their responsible journalism.
