Fairer deal for our fishermen

Regarding your article of fishing quotas (Observer, December 19), I fully agree with Paul Joy, the chairman of Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society.

Our smaller fishing fleets are not only vital to the local economy in Hastings and Rye, but are also vastly more sustainable and better for the environment than the big fishing organisations.

These increases in fishing quotas from the EU will mean nothing to them if this Government doesn’t hand over a fairer share of the total quota to our smaller under 10 metre fishing fleets.

The under 10 metre fishing fleets won a court battle for this to happen.

I will be writing to the fishing minister and continue to work with Maria Eagle and Labour’s DEFRA team to secure a fairer deal for our fishermen.
