Consultation clarification

In the Hastings Observer of September 12 our local MP Amber Rudd has a full page paid advert about the County Council bus consultation. I am happy to clarify the accurate position.

In the advert it says: ‘The only way to get your voice heard is to take part in the official consultation’.

That is inaccurate for a number of reasons and I think it’s important that readers are not misled.

1. All emails sent to the County Council regarding the buses go towards the report that officers will send to councillors.

2. All petitions on the topic will be counted and comments reflected in the final report.

3. All comments made at one of the various public meetings organised by the Labour Party and Sarah Owen will be sent in as further evidence of the strength of feeling on this issue.

4. All online petition comments submitted via Sarah Owen’s online petition will be treated as individual submissions. County officers have confirmed this.

We have rightly encouraged residents and business owners to complete the County consultation.

But, as many will appreciate, it is a cumbersome, complicated document that most people will not want to wade through.

I would have thought that our MP should be seeking to engage the widest possible number of responses however they choose to make their views known.
