Carers should get recognition

I WRITE to congratulate Amber Rudd for supporting national Carers Week, following your article in the Observer on Friday, May 18.

I would like to echo Amber’s concern that unpaid carers are recognised and supported.

This is of particular relevance to us in Hastings and Rother as an estimated 20,000 of us currently look after a family member or friend who could not manage without that support.

This year’s theme for Carers’ Week - In Sickness and in Health - could not be more apt as 80 per cent of all carers report that their caring role impacts on their own health and well-being.

Care for the Carers is the Carers’ Centre for East Sussex. If you look after someone and would like to speak to one of our staff or volunteers about the help that is available, please do come and see us at Rye Medical Centre on Monday, June 18 or at Priory Meadow in Hastings on Thursday, June 22.
