Building turned into soulless mall

I HAVE not been in St Clements Church for some years, although I was married there in 1956.

But I went to listen to the Treorchy Male Choir who were magnificent.

Imagine however my horror when instead of entering a charming atmospheric mediaeval building I found myself walking into a soulless mini shopping mall without any shops.

Gone were a lot of the pews replaced by nondescript chairs spread about on a floor of pale tiles.

Half the church blocked off with a glass screen topped with a sort of dress circle.

What were the authorities thinking of? What did the Faculty Notice say? What of English Heritage and the council’s own conservation officers? A jewel in Hastings crown replaced by a paste mock-up.

Shame on you all.
