Young riders from the Hastings area have been getting hands on pony care experience at the Buckswood school stables as part of Pony Week.

Many of the riders taking part visit the stables at Bucksworth school for riding lessons every Saturday, however, PR, Marketing and Development Manager Vicki Ireland, said Pony Week gave the youngsters the opportunity to really ‘muck in’ or, rather, ‘muck-out’.

“The Buckswood Stables is home to seven horses used by Buckswood students and the Saturday riding school,” she said.

“The Equestrian team at the school have had a very successful season, finishing thirteenth in the UK, having fought off stiff completion to represent Sussex in the National Finals at the Birmingham event hosted by sporting legend Clare Baldwin.”

But Vicki says it’s not all show jumping and dressage. “Buckswood Equestrian Scholar Zara Jenner is also celebrating this summer, having won Silver with the England Team at the Mounted Games European Championship.

“This discipline is not for the faint hearted, seeing competitors charging round obstacles, vaulting off and on ponies whilst undertaking various tasks in a relay style race against seven other teams.”

Vicki added: “Over the summer, Buckswood has made significant investments towards providing more outside space for its scholars including a woodland, farm and new stable.”
