Young Labour help charity

The ‘Big Red Quirky Quiz’ was held at the White Rock Hotel last Friday.

The well attended event was orgaised by James Bacon and James Prentice with Luke Manning-Cooper and James Bacon acting as Quiz Masters.

The Young Labour Group has been taking an active interest in the leadership race and before Jeremy Corbyn’s victory at the weekend they held a Pizza and Politics event to discuss the implications and who could lead Labour to victory.

James Bacon said: “This gave young people between the ages of 14-27 an opportunity to discuss the issues which they feel not only politicians need to be heralding for young people, but also to evaluate the pros and cons of each of the Labour Leadership candidates.”

Special guest speakers were Councillors Lee Clark, and Michael Wincott; former Parliamentary candidate for Wealden, Solomon Curtis and James Bacon, Vice Chair Of the West Branch of the Hastings Labour Party.

James Bacon said: The evening consisted of pizza, socialising and then a brief talk on behalf of each of the four Labour leadership candidates.

“Cllr Lee Clark spoke on behalf of Liz Kendall. Cllr Michael Wincott spoke of behalf of Yvette Cooper. Solomon Curtis spoke on behalf of Jeremy Corbyn while myself and James Prentice spoke on behalf of Andy Burnham. This was followed by a Q&A and discussion on policies young people believe Labour should adopt, with a specific emphasis on education.

“The evening was enjoyed by all, with the pizza certainly going down a treat. It was lovely to see 20 young people come together with a common purpose to look seriously at the candidates and how the party can move on and grow once again since its electoral defeat in May.

Secretary of Hastings Youth Council Vijay Jackson said: “The event was an invaluable opportunity for young people to engage with politics on our own terms, and to discuss crucial matters affecting us like scrapping university tuition fees and the proposed renationalisation of the railways as a public service.”

Cllr Michael Wincott said: “It was brilliant to meet articulate, passionate and engaged young people who were neither cynical or close-minded.”
