More than 50 keen young hockey players were able to learn skills from GB and England international Sam Ward when they took part in a successful Hockey Camp event at Horntye Park.
The camp was organised by Whitehouse Sports Coaching and sponsored by Vac Techniche Ltd.
Head Coach Rob Whitehouse said: “It helped to inspire and improve the children from current to new players.
“Ward signed everything from socks to sticks and held a Q&A session with some of the questions raising a smile.
“The excited children were coached on shooting, passing and dribbling techniques, with Ward providing one to one coaching to all the lucky hockey players.
“South Saxons Hockey Club once again provided some fantastic volunteers and promote the club.
seeing all smiling faces at the end of each day was amazing, watching them learn from an England International and getting to play with and against him was the icing on the cake.
Hockey sponsors Grays kindly donated two new sticks in which Ward awarded to Ella Smith and James Wills for playing in the spirit of the game.” Saxons president Peter Klein praised WSC and the camp, commenting “It was a superb couple of days with 50+ young players getting the coaching benefit from one of GB’s top mens players Sam Ward.
“It was great to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters and I am sure they are looking forward to the future camps with an impressive array of hockey superstars lined up to attend. The organisation is friendly and slick with the coaches and assistants from South Saxons HC contributing to the success of the camp.”
Rob Whitehouse added: “Our Easter camp is on April 6 and 7, with Guest coach Olympic Gold Medallist Susannah Townsend MBE. It is another perfect way to inspire the children to play hockey.
“To be able to keep attracting these world class athletes is a huge compliment to the company and long may it continue. Our work in schools in growing weekly and more youngsters are taking up the game.”
