A WARM and generous pensioner from Hailsham was killed in a tragic road accident on her way to church on Tuesday evening.

Brigid Margaret Hanratty or Bridie, as she was known was on her way to church at 8pm when she was hit by a car in Western Road, at the junction with Downsview Way.

The 75-year-old, who was born in Dublin, had seven children: four girls and three boys. This week, they made an emotional tribute to their 'wonderful' mother.

Speaking on behalf of the family, daughter Theresa said: 'She was known for her warm smile and cheery nature. Those who knew her would tell you that she never passed a collection box without contributing generously, even though she was a pensioner.

'She had a way with young people who were touched by her warmth. She recently met a young girl on the bus, who asked if she could keep in contact because she loved her sense of humour it was a good old Irish sense of humour!

'More recently she was a special minister at the local Catholic Church, St Wilfrids in Hailsham. Everyone who knew her loved her. She had a very strong faith and died tragically while crossing the road on her way to church.'

Bridie was a housewife for her whole life, but before moving from Ireland to East Hoathly in 1960, she occupied herself making felt hats. She even made one for the wife of the then-president of Ireland, who was seen wearing it.

When her husband James died in 1992, Bridie left her East Hoathly home and moved to Downsview Way in Hailsham, all her family having left the nest.

'She picked up her kind, warm smile and charitable ways from her mother,' said Theresa. 'She devoted her time to anyone she met who was in need of help or a kind word. She was involved with anything to do with the church. She went every day. She was wonderful.'

All inquiries about the funeral should be directed to Hailsham Funeral Service, on 01323 440909. The family have asked for flowers from close family only, but for donations to be made to Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident. It is believed there were other cars on the road at the time. The 35-year-old man driving the car, a Peugeot 309 hatchback, was uninjured.
