A TECHNOLOGY savvy pensioner who runs computer classes for older people in Hastings and St Leonards, has been crowned O2 Guru for Life.

Colin Rout, 69, of Park Drive, was entered into the competition launched by O2 this summer, to challenge the perception that older people cannot get to grips with technology.

Colin runs weekly workshops at the St Leonards community centre, which have become so popular that there is now a waiting list.

He said: “I didn’t really expect to win. I was on holiday at the time, when I got the call, and it was quite a surprise.”

“I am pleased, and my friends and family are happy for me.”

As Guru for Life, Colin will be making appearances in 02 stores, including the one in Hastings, and online, providing helpful technology tips.

He will be working alongside O2’s existing team of technology gurus, bringing his own experience of helping to make technology accessible for the over-65s.

Phil Nolan, O2 Guru Leader, said: “While many older people are embracing this newly digital world, there are many who can feel alienated by the nature of the help that’s available to them.

“Gurus for Life is about technology for everyone – by providing the help people need to unlock its benefits.

“Colin stood out as an ambassador for the nation’s pensioners. We’re delighted to build on his fantastic work with his own local community in Hastings and help him inspire more people across the country to use the power of technology to improve lives.”
