Hastings Winkle Club holds its Christmas Time to Remember event on Saturday December 18.
The aim is to remember the special contribution given to the community by Old Towners who served in the Lifeboat Service, Her Majesty’s Coastguard, as Fishermen or as Winkle Club members. Also expected to be present are the Pett Level Rescue Service.
The event commences at the Priscilla MacBean Site, Old London Road from 6pm onwards.
A short service takes place before a procession forms up in Harold Road.
At 7.15pm the procession will make its way down All Saints Street to Winkle Island for the formal Act of Remembrance.
On the Island itself there will be Carol Singing and wreaths will be laid. Once formal proceedings are concluded, hot soup and rolls will be served on the Stade area.
Earlier in the day there will be a special ceremony to present a lady with a new winkle after her late husband’s winkle was stolen.
When Maggie Mockridge was robbed in her home in Spain, she was devastated to find that along with the loss of the contents of her jewellery box, was her late father’s precious Winkle.
Her father, Arthur White, had lived in Hastings all his life and she was so pleased to have taken ownership of the winkle when he died.
When informed of her loss Hastings Winkle Club was delighted to agree to replace Maggie’s lost Winkle and she will receive the winkle at the Fishermen’s Institute in All Saints Street at lunchtime on December 18.
