Last Monday 22nd July was said to be the hottest day for seven years with the temperature peaking at 33.5 degrees C. This was the same as Cairo and Athens and a degree hotter than Tel Aviv. At 4.24 pm the royal baby was welcomed into the world and at midnight the thunderstorm arrived and helped cool the air.

Winchelsea Archaeological Society is holding its Annual General Meeting tomorrow (Saturday) in the New Hall at 11 am. A date for your diary is Sunday September 15th which is the Heritage Open Day in Winchelsea and WAS will be hosting free tours of Blackfriars Barn and its cellars on behalf of the National Trust.

The Garden Society has organised a Community Garden Opening event which is just for local residents but close friends and visiting families will be welcomed. This will take place on Wednesday July 31st from 2 till 5pm and maps will be available at the Post Office and on the day at each of the sixteen or more gardens. At the first garden they visit visitors will be invited to make a contribution of £3 and the proceeds will go towards a local charity.

On Saturday August 3rd there will be a Circuit Creative Prayer Day based at Wesley’s Methodist Chapel from 10 am to 4 pm. The day will include prayer, meditation and a consideration of God’s creation through creative activities like painting, photography and poetry writing. There is also opportunity to talk and walk around the area of Winchelsea and enjoy its landscape and range of historical sites. Members from the Bexhill, Hastings and Rye Methodist Circuit are welcome to participate as well as local friends of the Chapel.

Following the Parochial Church Council’s meeting last Friday at the Rectory members were required to vote on the resolution whether to accept a woman as incumbent or priest in charge. Icklesham Church PCC also voted on this and the outcome for both churches was that as a principle the resolution for female ministry was accepted.

Don’t forget that there is a Table Sale taking place tomorrow (Saturday) in the Community Hall. Plenty of items will be on sale as from 11 am.

The morning Communion service in St Richard’s Church this Sunday July 28th begins at 9.15 am and is led by Revd Canon David Frost.

The next evening of Bingo played for cash and prizes is Wednesday July 31st. This will be at the Community Hall and doors are open at 7 for a 7.30 pm start.

A family event organised by Rye Harbour Nature Reserve entitled: Moths for all Ages is planned for Wednesday July 31st. This is a great opportunity to learn about the different moths that fly around the reserve at night and observe those caught in the moth trap on the previous evening. Donations would be appreciated and the place to meet is Lime Kiln Cottage Information Centre at 10 am.
