WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT SUPERMARKET PLAN

PLANS to build a third supermarket in Lewes '“ alongside the existing Tesco Store '“ have been met with general public incredulity.

Aldi Stores Ltd has submitted proposals to build a store, with 79 car parking spaces, at Kingston House, Brooks Road, currently used by Robert Horne, the paper distribution and storage company.

The application involves demolition of the existing warehouse and erection of a store with 1,624 sq metres of retail and storage space, a car park with eight cycle spaces, and landscaping and highways work.

The size of the store, if it went ahead, would be just over half that of the current Tesco Store.

Lewes Town Council's planning committee, meeting on Tuesday, made no bones about objecting to the scheme, expressing 'serious concerns' about the incremental growth of out-of-town shopping facilities at the expense of independent shops in the town centre.

Lewes Chamber of Commerce president David Quinn said the scheme would be opposed.

Aldi regional property director Richard Kitching confirmed the company wanted to open a store in Lewes and was looking to do something special for the town.

We asked readers for their views. Here's what people are saying:

Aldi is set to seek permission to build a store at Brooks Road '“ next to Tesco.

I can't see another supermarket affecting any other shop. It's A Knockout arrived without a word. '“ via text

Lewes, at present, offers variety and character for shoppers and two superstores offer the convenience of the weekly shopping under either or both roofs. A third would be unnecessary.

Aldi is a cut price supermarket and presents no threat to any independent shops or small traders in the Lewes area. None of them sell goods that Aldi would sell. It is more likely to attract people to Lewes. It will provide additional parking for customers who may use the High Street while they are using Aldi. The only shops which will be threatened by Aldi are Tesco and Waitrose who will hopefully have to reduce their prices to compete.
