Rye and District (inc Westfield) Lions. Lions Give Rye Transport a “Lift”. A coffee morning and afternoon tea event held in the garden of Rae Festing in Rye and organised by Rye and District Lions Club raised a grand total of £1,000. This money will be donated to Rye & District Community Transport, making the total donations £3,000 by Rye Lions to this good cause over the last few years. With fine weather on their side, a steady flow of both local residents and tourists, many from the Continent, visited the garden throughout the day – somewhat assisted by a rather persistent lion drawing them in from the High Street. All the stalls were very busy, with the cakes produced by their ladies quickly selling out. The plants, grown by Lions Club members, were also very popular and many visitors left happily clutching prizes they had won on other stalls. The coffee, tea, cream teas, strawberries and light lunches were also eagerly consumed in the lovely garden. Rye Lions wish to thank Rae Festing for the kind use of her garden yet again. Rye Lions have a weekend off this week, but will have their stalls at Iden Fete on 27 July, Northiam Fete on 1 August, Rye Maritime Festival on 11 August and the Rye Horse and Dog Show on 17 August.

Rye President creates a Precedent. After over 36 years, Rye and District Lions Club has its first lady President. Of its 21 members, five are ladies with the first lady member joining some five years ago. The handover from last year’s President, Malcolm McDonough, took place at a “Pot-Luck” evening. The new President, Sue Clay, has lived in Icklesham for eleven years after moving from East Dulwich. Sue has two adult children and her son lives in Toronto, Canada, who she tries to visit as often as possible. Prior to semi-retiring, she still works part-time at the New Inn, Winchelsea, she worked for 26 years as an Administration Officer with Social Services. In addition, to receiving the official chain of office from Malcolm, she was also weighed down with the unofficial heavy metal chain. Sue was heard to say that she was glad she would not have to wear that at official functions. In addition to her role as President of Rye Lions, Sue is also an active member of the Icklesham’s Robin Hood Bonfire Society. Sue and her fellow Lions, are putting together the finishing touches to the arrangements for the Annual Rye Raft Race and Fete, which Rye Lions have organised for 35 years. This year it takes place on the Bank Holiday Sunday, 25 August, with the fete opening at noon and the Raft Race starting at 2.30pm with rafts assembling from 1pm. There has been considerable interest from groups wishing to compete this year. There is still time to enter a raft and anyone interested should contact Bob Harvey on 01424 751059. Stall space at the Fete is almost full, but if any organisation wishes to fill the last few spaces they should contact Reg Emson on 01797 224174 as soon as possible.
