Weaver and textile designer at museum

A display of new work by local award-winning textile designer and weaver, Caroline Richards, will be on show at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery from next week.

The large pieces on display, inspired by animal markings and the textures of traditional cloth are intended as wall-hangings or bed covers. They exploit the design possibilities offered by the hand processes Caroline uses; stitching together woven lengths, use of appliqué and bonding of layers to achieve a double-sided cloth where ‘gritty’ yarns from British Mountain breeds form the top layer and a contrasting soft layer of Merino. Caroline, who lives in Hastings, says colour is crucial to her work and she does all her own dying.
