Weatherman isray of sunshineat charity event

Veteran BBC weatherman Michael Fish was the guest speaker at a special dinner held to mark the 50th anniversary of an East Sussex charity.

SASBAH (Sussex Association for spina bifida and hydrocephalus) supports around 500 disabled people across the county, and runs a monthly Hastings and Rother Support Group.

The weatherman spoke about his long career at the BBC, and referred to the infamous wrong forecast in 1987 when he said there would be no hurricane.

a few hours before the storm broke, on October 15 1987, he said during a forecast: “Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way... well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t!”.

That evening, the worst storm to hit South East England for three centuries caused record damage and killed 19 people.

Michael Fish MBE was born in Eastbourne and Fish is the longest serving broadcast meteorologist on British television.

Around £750 was raised for the charity at the event held at the Lansdowne Hotel, Eastbourne.

SASBAH was formed as an independent charity in 1965 to meet the growing demand for support services for those with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Sussex.

The charity’s Adviser Service has been running since 1971, and provides community and home-based help to all our service users.

The emphasis is on working with individuals to encourage and nurture independence rather than on dispensing ready-made solutions.

Independent living and maximising opportunities for this group are the main aims, achieved through direct provision of support, advice and assistance to service users, their families, and professionals who are involved with them.
