WATER COMPANY ADOPTS UPDATED DROUGHT PLAN

South East Water has updated its Drought Plan, which outlines how it will manage water supplies in future droughts, following widespread consultation.

It is the first time water companies in England and Wales have carried out consultation of this kind.

The plan sets out what the company needs to do, and by when, to ensure both water supplies and the environment are safeguarded during extended periods of dry weather.

It looks at restrictions such as hosepipe and sprinkler bans, public awareness campaigns, the development of new resources, the transfer of water between regions and the use of drought permits and drought orders to increase supply and reduce demand.

David Shore, Director of Assets at South East Water, said: "This drought plan forms part of our back-up programme for managing resources through extremely dry periods such as the drought we are currently facing.

"The consultation period has proved extremely useful in drawing on the expertise of several organisations and ensuring we have an agreed plan in place to work together to beat future droughts."

The 2006 statutory Drought Plan was circulated earlier this summer to key stakeholders and local interest groups for comment.
