Warning after waxy substance washes up on beach

People are being urged to keep away from lumps of a waxy substance washed up on beaches in Hastings and Bexhill recently.

The substance is likely to be palm oil as a ship discharged a large amount into the sea off the coast of Cornwall in October.

Although harmless to humans, residents are asked to keep dogs on leads as it can be harmful to them if eaten.

Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council are making regular checks of the beaches in the area.

If found, the substance is being removed and disposed of.

Anyone who finds some is asked not to touch it and to contact the Beach Inspector at [email protected] or call 01424 427025.
