POPPIES: November means remembrance for most of us and poppies are the flower of remembrance. The village's knitting group have come up with a bright idea this year and are actually knitting beautiful poppies to pin on your lapel, and not only the traditional red ones. By special request they are also knitting purple poppies which commemorate all the animals lost in the two world wars, many of whom died on the battlefields or in the skies above them. War Horse, the book by Michael Morpurgo, subsequently dramatised for the stage and film, reminded us of the brave horses who died in our service, but there were others, like the pigeons who carried messages. The knitting group's poppies can be bought at the Coffee Shop (open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings) for donations which will go to the British Legion.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: This year the parish’s Remembrance Sunday service will be held at All Saints’ church (re-opened after some re-ordering work) and will as usual start at 10.50am so that we can have the names of the village’s men who died in two World Wars read before the two minutes’ silence at 11am. Please note the time. Afterwards the congregation will gather at the War Memorial for the laying of wreaths (at about midday). This year we will be remembering especially Lt Col Robert de Bray Hassell of Tanners Manor whose name was inexplicably left off the War memorial when it was built in the 1920s but which has now been added. Relatives of his family will be at the service.

QUIZ RETURNS: Our monthly pub quizzes return with a Halloween Special on Monday. Cost will be £8 per head which includes a supper of Ghouly Goulash, cash prizes, and a bottle of bubbly for the best dressed witch. Appropriate costume is optional but welcome.

TWINNING ASSOCIATION: The Heathfield and Waldron Twinning Association will be holding a fund-raising Quiz at the Lucas Hall on Friday November 11 at 7.30pm at the Lucas Hall. All are welcome and you’re invited to come in teams of six or be sorted into teams on the night. Contact Gill Temple (01435 812861) for more details or to book yourself in. The cost is £10 per head which includes supper, but please bring your own drinks.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION: There is to be an exhibition of photographs by local residents at All Saints’ Church from Thursday to Saturday, November 17 to 19. There are two categories, the first is open and of any subject and the second of local interest. Prints should be A4 size, preferably mounted on card with the name and address of the photographer on the back, with the title of the print. Closing date for entries is Sunday November 13 and they can be delivered to Rafters, Whitehouse Lane at any time or please call 01435 812147 if you would like an entry collected. There will be a gallery reception with bar and refreshments on Saturday November 19 from 4pm to 7pm.

SERVICES: Morning services this Sunday will be at St Bartholomew’s as All Saints’ is still closed for re-ordering until Remembrance Sunday. Services will be at 8am Holy Communion and 10am for Parish Eucharist.
