VOTE: Plan says 500 extra homes are needed in Angmering

MAJOR housing and business development is being proposed at Angmering during the 14-year life of Arun’s new local plan.

Almost 500 new homes should be built in the village, and about 21 acres of land should be set aside to create new jobs desperately needed in the Arun area, the draft plan states.

Summing up the village’s advantages, the 362-page document says: “Angmering has experienced considerable new residential development in recent years but retains a village character.

“With improvements to the A280, proposed improvements to the A259 and the possible securing of additional primary school places, Angmering is considered a sustainable place for additional housing and employment growth.”

With large-scale housing schemes at Littlehampton and Bognor already in the pipeline, including 1,200 at North Littlehampton and 600 at Courtwick, the district nevertheless still needs further big housing sites to meet its target for new homes.

The draft plan says: “While the coastal towns will continue to remain the focus for a high proportion of mixed development during the plan period, new strategic housing growth will be focused on (i) the villages of Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate and (ii) areas in and around Angmering.

“Both areas provide a relatively good range of local shops and services, including education, health facilities and mainline rail stations. Growth at these locations would provide for the delivery of critical infrastructure, open space and recreation areas suitable for the needs of a growing population while also helping to maintain the distinctive character of individual villages.

“Additional growth in both these areas would provide a stimulus for the provision of additional and improved services and facilities for the benefit of the local population, thereby reducing the need to travel to larger settlement areas.”
