A DEDICATED volunteer is urging more people to join a new scheme launched by St Michael’s Hospice last year to provide people with life-limiting illnesses extra support at home.

Chris Farrell is a volunteer with the Hospice Neighbours scheme which helps people with everyday tasks such as shopping and light housework or by providing company.

The volunteers’ help can provide the extra support people need to remain at home towards the end of life, and Chris is calling for more people to get involved with the scheme

Chris said: “I began visiting John in May last year and straight away we hit it off. John and his wife Pam welcomed me into their home and every Wednesday John and I would jump on the bus together and go for a cuppa and chat. Of course I was on hand if there were any odd jobs to be done, but John preferred to spend our time being out and about and visiting an array of coffee shops and sharing life stories. At the latter stages of John’s illness I visited him at home. Often joined by his two dogs Boris and Lara who would sit on John’s bed, while John entertained us with fascinating stories of working out of the Lord Chamberlain’s Office, and his role as the official photographer of fine arts for Christies, Sotherby’s and Phillips.

John very sadly passed away last month, and I will miss him terribly, but I feel very privileged to have been part of John’s life during the final stages of his life.

“For me volunteering is special; no amount of money can recreate the feeling of doing something for someone else. Everyone should have a go at volunteering, and being a Hospice Neighbour is the perfect way to get involved.” For more information about the scheme call 01424 445177 or email neighbours@stmichaelshospice.com.
