Volcano means longer Easter break for Battle Abbey kids

Boarders at Battle Abbey School enjoyed a slightly extended Easter break, thanks to the Iceland volcano.

More than hlf the boarders failed to make it back in time for the start of the new school term on Wednesday, with many stuck in Eastern Europe and the Middle and Far East.

But staff will be taking lessons via video link to ensure stranded pupils don't fall behind.

Battle Abbey School spokesperson James Dennett said: "Currently 23 of our 52 boarders have made it back to school in time for the start of term, the rest are stuck overseas.

"We are hearing a great variety of potential return dates up to and including May 17. Fortunately we have a structure in place for video conference lessons via Skype and a number of the staff are coming on Saturday to teach extra lessons."
