Village ready to celebrate landfill news

NEWS that all attempts to create a massive landfill site at Washington have been abandoned were greeted by an ecstatic community this week.

The news came in a terse letter from applicants Veolia on Monday, when the company said: "After due consideration of the planning committee's decisive vote, we will not be progressing any further with the development of Rock Common landfill site."

The plans had been to dump 5.5million tonnes of waste in the quarry over a 25-year period.

The letter was swiftly followed by a letter from Wiston Estate manager William Trinick, which said: "Wiston Estate has accepted Veolia's decision not to proceed with a planning application for landfill at Rock Common. The estate is now left with the challenge of finding the best use for Rock Common once the remainder of the sand has been extracted and the agreement we have with the current user has ceased.

"We look forward to working with Washington community and developing ideas for the site."
