Van driver suffers back injuries after A21 accident

A VAN driver was taken to hospital with suspected back and neck injuries following an accident on the A21 last Friday afternoon (September 20).

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the A21 at Kent Street, at the junction of Bluemans Lane, at around 4.40pm.

A blue Honda car had crashed into the back of a silver Peugeot van as the two vehicles headed south.

The van driver, a 22-year-old man from St Leonards, was trapped in his vehicle.

Fire crews from Battle were forced to enter the back of the van, empty the contents and cut through a metal grill to get to the injured driver.

The man was removed from the back of the van on a spinal board.

He was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

The driver of the Honda, a 55-year-old man from Robertsbridge, was not seriously hurt.

South East Coast Ambulance Service took the man to the Conquest Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Police closed the road in both directions while the scene was cleared.

The stretch was finally re-opened to traffic at 6.30pm.

No arrests have been made.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
