WOMEN and girls are urgently needed to sign up to join an annual fundraiser to help pay for research into cancer.
More than 2,000 have applied to join this year’s Race for Life but there are still more than 1,400 places left to fill.
Organisers from Cancer Research UK, the charity that benefits, said uptake for 2011 had been significantly lower than expected.
The event is next Sunday (July 17) in Alexandra Park and entry closes on July 14.
In the annual fundraiser women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities join together to walk, jog or run 5km to raise money to help beat cancer.
Hayley Reynolds, event manager for Race for Life in Hastings, said: “We are very grateful to all the women who have already entered Race for Life in Hastings but we urgently need many more. With just two weeks to go until the event day, there are still 1,400 places to fill.
“We are issuing an urgent rallying call to the town’s ‘missing’ women and hope they will hear our plea and register as soon as possible.
“Together, they will help us create a fantastic atmosphere on the day and every step they take will help doctors, nurses and scientists take major strides forward in research.”
Last year, almost 2,500 women took part in Race for Life in Hastings and helped raise £116,293 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.
Women can boost their contribution to the charity by doing a ‘wardrobe work-out’ before their event.
It is encouraging them to sort out and bag up clothes, books and accessories they no longer use and take them to the Donation Station at Race for Life. By doing this each participant could help raise as much as an extra £30.
Women can enter Race for Life at www.raceforlife.org or by calling 0871 641 1111.
