Several police officers were called to the beach at St Leonards this afternoon (Monday, March 6) following reports of a distressed woman in the sea.

Concerned members of the public called police to the scene near Warrior Square Gardens at 4pm.

Eyewitnesses reported that the woman was fully-clothed and was seen standing at the end of a groyne as the water rose around her.

Police managed to persuade the woman to come out of the sea.

She was taken to hospital by the South East Coast Ambulance Service to be checked over.
