Unemployed drug user fined £100 for smoking cannabis

A cannabis smoker was fined £100 after being caught with drugs in his jeans pocket.

Gavin Whyte, 27, of Cambridge Road, appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with possession of a class B drug.

He pleaded guilty.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, told the court that police had been called to Queens Road on August 13 amid reports of a man being abusive.

Whyte was subsequently pointed out by passers-by and arrested.

When searched, police found three small bags of cannabis in his trousers.

Ronan Crummy, defending, said: "The police did not weigh the drugs because it would have been more trouble than it was worth. I am told the amount involved would only have made six or seven joints.

"He (Whyte) normally smokes when he has trouble sleeping and on this occasion he had been drinking and was finishing a cigarette he had started the night before."

Whyte, who is unemployed, claiming benefits and already has an outstanding court fine, was ordered to pay a 100 fine and 55 costs.
