Turning the clock back

THE Downland village of Alfriston is gearing itself up for the annual Dickensian Evening tomorrow (Saturday, December 7).

This is when the village goes back in time to recreate the atmosphere of Christmas in Victorian times.

Many traders dress in costume and there is a spectacular opening ceremony featuring the arrival of Santa who switches on the Christmas tree lights in the village square.

The Firle Bonfire Society torchbearers, the Eastbourne Scottish Pipe Band and The Expedient Brass Band will all accompany him.

The High Street will be closed to all traffic from 4pm to 9pm and an excellent park and ride system will operate from Drusillas Park.

Father Christmas will arrive at about 4.45pm. The bands will play at various times during the evening, with the Salvation Army Band playing carols around the Christmas Tree between 7-8pm.
