Trio earns school £1,500 for safety

Ten-year-olds Jasmine Harris, Harry Howard and Regan Miles spoke at a countywide competition to find the safest place at a school.

Their comments took South Bersted to second place in a contest which involved every primary and secondary school in West Sussex.

Jasmine, Harry and Regan made their remarks in the final at a hotel in Lower Beeding where they were joined by a trio of teachers. But only the childrens' views were taken into account by the judges.

The assessors '“ from the police, fire and rescue services and councils '“ also visited the school on Church Lane where they also only spoke to the pupils.

The school's efforts as runner-up earned a 1,500 prize and a certificate to acknowledge its achievement. It was based on the school's zoned approach to its playground.

This has created distinct areas for separate activities such as basketball, football and skipping with monitoring by supervisors.

The school's prize money will be spent extending the zones to the playing field ready for summer as well as buying new sports equipment to be used in the areas. First place in the competition went to Connaught School at Littlehampton.
