Travellers go

THE group of travellers who began an illegal encampment on the Down last week left yesterday following joint action by Sussex Police and Rother District Council. day.

Inspector Martin Mann of Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team said today: "I went up on Friday and served a Section 77 Notice from Rother District Council requiring the travellers to leave.

"We had agreed that Rother would provide them with rubbish skips. Fifteen vehicles arrived on the Down behind Heatherdune Road last Wednesday evening."

Inspector Mann visited the site last Thursday morning, returning the following day to monitor the situation.

"They went on Sunday, leaving the area in a tidy condition. They had piled up black plastic sacks."
