TRAVEL NEWS: Relief in sight for Rustington bypass drivers

MOTORISTS should be breathing a sigh of relief tomorrow (Friday) when major roadworks on the A259 at Rustington come to an end, two weeks later than scheduled.

The 570,000 scheme to provide a new traffic light-controlled junction to serve the Sainsbury's supermarket in New Road and other stores on the site meant four months of roadworks, often leading to delays for drivers at peak times.

Long queues have built up approaching from the east, where the two-lane approach to the Station Road roundabout was restricted to a single carriageway, and from the west, with cones filtering traffic from Littlehampton on the dual carriageway stretch down to one lane.

Rustington-based Store Property, which owns the New Road retail developments, has paid 450,000 towards the work, with the remaining 120,000 coming from West Sussex County Council.

The junction improvements were a condition of planning permission for a large extension to the Sainsbury's supermarket, following concerns that the existing slip road was already hazardous and that the dangers would increase if more traffic was generated.

Work started on the junction in July and was scheduled to take 16 weeks, but has overrun by a fortnight. May Gurney Ltd was the main contractor.

From tomorrow, when the traffic lights are switched on, drivers travelling from the west along the A259 will be able to turn right into the retail site, but there will be no right turn for those leaving the stores and wanting to turn east towards Worthing, who will still have to use the slipway and head westwards to use the Rustington Golf Centre roundabout.
