Network Rail Kent and Sussex said the barriers on the A2100 have been bent across the railway.

Southeastern said, as a result of this, trains were running at a reduced speed.

Train services running through Battle may be cancelled or delayed by up to ten minutes. Disruption is expected until 3.30pm.

Southeastern added: “A road vehicle collided with a set of level crossing barriers between Battle and Robertsbridge.

“All trains were stopped for almost an hour whilst Network Rail response staff and the police made the level crossing safe.

“Trains have now resumed running, but are going through the area at a reduced speed until the barriers have been fully repaired.

Rother Police said the damage caused by the lorry meant the level crossing was not working.
