Dave Howson said he had seen the attitude of drivers deteriorate along Highfield Road in recent months. Both sides of the stretch of the road from the railway bridge to Ivy Close are usually lined with vehicles.

Mr Howson, of the Glenwood Estate, said: “The normal ritual along this road, which only allows one car to pass at a time, is to come to the entry point and check to see if any cars
are coming.

“We had noticed that this was becoming increasingly difficult to drive down as cars did not take turns or consider drivers that had been waiting for a time.”

But an incident with adriver travelling in the
opposite direction recently had led to a stand-off in the middle
of the road.

Mr Howson waited for another car and two cyclists to pass before he began to drive southwards – only to find another driver suddenly heading in his direction and only stopping in front of
his bumper.

The dispute only ended when Mr Howson reversed. Such problems were becoming
more common.

“Something clearly needs to
be done on this section before either an accident or violence ensues,” he said.

“We have been stuck in traffic at this road when two other cars had the same incident.”
