Handcross crash photos and video: vehicle fire causes severe delays on A23 in Sussex as emergency services arrive at scene

There were reports of a crash on the A23 in Sussex this morning (Wednesday, April 17).

AA Traffic News at www.theaa.com/route-planner/traffic-news said: “Reports of slow traffic due to crash on A23 Southbound at Handcross Turn-off (Handcross).”

The collision was first reported at 6.15am.

AA Traffic News said there are severe delays on the A23 southbound between the A23 and B2115.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said on X at about 8am: “Our crews from @CrawleyFire999 (Crawley Fire Station) are at the scene of a vehicular fire on the A23 Southbound at the Handcross slip road. All Southbound lanes are closed leading to significant delays. Please allow extra time when you travel and avoid the area if possible.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service told this newspaper: “At 6.51am this morning we were called to a fire involving a vehicle at the A23 Southbound at the Handcross slip road. Joint Fire Control mobilised two fire engines – one from Crawley and one from Horsham to the sceme. National Highways are also in attendance. All southbound lanes are closed leading to significant delays. Please allow extra time when you travel and avoid the area where possible.”

At 8am National HIghways South East warned that there are three miles of congestion on approach and advised drivers to allow extra journey time.
