The town’s public conveniences have scooped a number of awards.

Hastings Borough Council this week was flushed with success after winning 19 Loo of the Year Awards, including the coveted title of best Local Authority-run loos in the UK.

More than 1,600 entries were received and assessed against 100 judging criteria including signage, décor, fixtures and fittings, and overall standards of cleanliness and management. Every loo received a grading ranging from bronze to platinum and winners that received gold and platinum awards were listed for a number of national awards covering England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. At a presentation on Tuesday (December 16), the attendants and cleaning staff of 18 of the town’s toilets received four platinum and 11 gold awards presented by Loo of the Year Awards managing director, Mike Bone.

Councillor Dawn Poole, the council’s lead member for leisure and amenities, said: “Winning 19 awards is an excellent achievement. Not only did we win the best authority-run loos in the UK but the Falaise Fitness Centre also scooped the National Award for Sports and Health Clubs. Well done to everyone!”
